Orientalism

These are stills from the Miramax film "The Thief and the Cobbler." Set in Arabia, the story revolves around a young cobbler who must save the kingdom from an army of one-eyed men when the three golden balls protceting the kingdom are stolen off their minaret by a thief working for an evil sorcerer. The stylization of the animation and the choice of characters he meets along the way, including an exotic and disproportionate princess named 'YumYum', are not examplary choices, let alone appropriate subjects of a children's film.'
PS I also found a website which follows the "use of Buddhist imagery and ideas" in pop culture and merchandising. They have a few pages of images to see, if you'd like to check it out- The Worst Horse: Dharma-Burger

This movie is a perfect example of how much Orientalism is still alive and well ...and passed on to younger generations! No one really tends to think how inappropriate this sort of movie is, between the names and animation. This is a very effective example, especially since it's targeted at youth: the ones still figuring out how to perceive the world.
